Data Services and Expertise at SDSC

Managing, publishing, and discovering the knowledge that is buried in large data collections is a team effort that includes researchers, the staff who create and maintain the systems, and the data experts who coordinate and guide the processes. SDSC is proud to be part of that team and to meet the data needs of researchers. The Data Services Group participates in the review of requests for allocations as part of the Data Allocations Committee, and they assist users with all aspects of data management, including:

  • Guidance on allocations requests
  • Data migration, upload, and management
  • Portal creation and collection publication
  • Large scale data analysis and mining
  • Database/management tools selection (Oracle, DB2, MySQL, SRB, etc.)
  • Distributed data management
  • Database application tuning
  • Database optimization
  • Schema design and SQL query tuning

Ken Nunes and Roman Olschanowsky are members of the Data Services group, which is headed by Natasha Balac. Ken's main expertise is with Oracle database development. As part of Data Services, Ken assists Principal Investigators with any of their database requirements, including uploading and migrating data across database platforms, schema design and optimization, and SQL coding and query tuning. Roman Olschanowsky's expertise is with data collection management, storage systems, and data management software. One such software is SDSC's "Storage Resource Broker" (SRB), a data grid file system.

Alex Wu and Mona Wong-Barnum make up the Portals and Web Development Team. Alex's main expertise is with web applications development with Java and various web technologies such as Flash ActionScript. Recent work involved configuration of GridSphere portal framework and research and development with the Globus Toolkit. He is interested in technologies for portable devices and technologies with direct impact for the K-12 community.

Mona supports Data Central users with their web development needs.  Her expertise is web application/portal development using various technologies such as Java, Java3D, AJAX, perl, GridSphere, and others.  Mona also has a background in visualization and user-centric interface design.

In addition, the Data Services Group coordinates with the Allocated Computing Systems and the Storage Systems & Production Servers groups to assess infrastructure requirements.
